Drawing Demo: Chess Pawn

This demo shows how to draw a chess pawn from any orientation by constructing a simplified form first. The simplified form consists of four cylinders and a sphere. You can use the 3d model yourself here.

How To Construct

This is one way to construct the pawn step by step as shown in the illustrations below:

1. draw the top of a cylinder and the barrel, but without drawing the other side. Draw it lightly, these are construction lines supporting the drawing of the rest of the pawn, drawn in red in the example below. We don't have to estimate where the cylinder ends just yet. Draw a dot in the middle of the top of the cylinder, it's where the spere will touch. Also draw the center line through the cylinder as that will help align the cylinders below it.
2. Draw the sphere at the top. It will touch the center of the cylinder top and the sides of the cylinder.
3. Draw the other cylinders below it. The first and third cylinder touch the construction cylinder (red in the drawings below), the second cylinder is narrower and the fourth cylinder is wider. Try to figure out where the first cylinder touches the sphere. Draw the cylinders centered around the center line of the construction cylinder.

After that, you can round and adjust certain areas to make it look more like a real pawn and not a simplified one.
