Lessons From Michelangelo

There was a great Michelangelo exhibition at the Teylers Museum near me recently, and, of course, I had to go, with a camera to capture images for the Morning Sketches APP section.

Libyan Sibyl study by Michelangelo

So I was standing in front of the museum at quarter to ten. I wanted to be early, before the crowds arrived. Then two Dutch celebrities approached me and introduced themselves! I thought that was nice. Until they started ignoring me. Later, I figured out they thought I was with their film crew. That was funny!

And so there are now 33 new Michelangelo reference cards on the website, five of which feature multiple images of statues from different angles. You can find them here.

Note that the 18+ images are filtered; by default, you don’t see all of them.

It’s incredible to stand in front of these masterpieces. I have been in awe of the Libyan Sibyl study forever, and now I was standing in front of it! And now it’s part of my website!

The celebs were meant to walk around the exhibition and comment on the art. One is a comedian, the other a writer. You have these programs where celebs comment on art in museums, and I never get it. They don’t know anything about it!

While the exhibition focused on the fact that he drew men a lot, there is much we artists can learn from him. I made a new demo page here that shows some of the tricks he used. I learned about these tricks from the book “Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters” by Robert Beverly Hale. It is way more helpful to listen to someone like that than to random Dutch celebrities.

Check it out! The tricks the old masters used were pretty cool.

Yours sincerely,
