1) The bad news first: from now on, if you create a new account, you have to write 2 critiques first before you can post an image for critique.
However! If you write a half-decent critique, I will make sure it is “Liked”, and you will get another critique credit, so that after writing just one critique, you will have enough critique credits to post your own art.
2) As a critiquer, you can now also add an image with the critique to clarify your critique.
3) Below the critique, the artist, the critique giver, and moderators can now chat there and discuss the critique further. Anyone can see the chat.
4) There is now a notification center so you can directly see all the critiques and chat messages meant for you.
5) I made several smaller changes, little bug fixes. (You shouldn’t have to keep logging in.)
You can check it out over here.
The philosophy behind this server is that if students can become each other’s critique-givers, it could theoretically handle any number of students because the number of critique-givers would grow equally fast.
It’s what MBA types would call a “scalable model.” If we can find a model where students can help each other, that could grow without needing twice as many “teachers”. In theory!
For that, the critiques are defined as you writing down five things you notice. It’s just that simple. You may notice things the artist doesn’t, and they can use that information to improve their work.
The jury is still out on whether it will work, though. Artists prefer receiving critiques over writing them.
I should note that you learn a lot from writing critiques! You should get into that mindset of analyzing art and putting your opinion into words, because you’ll be explaining it to yourself along the way!
I try to make time to critique every piece of art. I am up to date with that again. If it takes a few days, you get an email when there’s a critique of your work, so you should be getting at least one critique. Give it a try!
Yours sincerely,
