Draw and Listen - Should You DRAW DAILY?

The Why And How

I am experimenting with YouTube live streams, and this was the second experiment: recording audio “live” as I streamed a pre-recorded video. This video is scheduled to go live tomorrow as a regular video-on-demand. I will try to be there in the chat, so I hope you join me there!

I want to try something else, and I’ll probably do this right after the video above goes live.

I am in the process of documenting the pen drawing exercises I have discovered over the years and which had the following properties: 1) I enjoyed doing them every second, 2) they improved my skills, and 3) they had a high chance of arriving at a nice result.

I copied a few of the Tom Richmond caricatures he made as warm-ups long ago, and I discovered that even though I got some proportions and angles not exactly right, my version still looked cool! There was some leeway; the design was just so good, and also, probably, because it was a caricature already anyway, I didn’t have to get the proportions exactly “right”; there isn’t a “right”; it’s a caricature! Proportions and angles can vary and still look good.

I went in search of drawing exercises that also had that property: they were conducive to nice results.

The next live streams will still be pre-recorded, as I am not ready to go live yet. Still, I want to film myself as I go through the exercises, figuring out how and why they work, effectively designing the drawing exercises on-camera, me thinking out loud, mentioning what I am noticing works or doesn’t work, changing the exercise on the fly to see if a different approach works better.

I’m unsure whether these videos will lead to anything, whether I can fill the space with voice as I draw, or whether you will show up in the chat to talk to me there. But if it works, that could be really fantastic: I need to research these pen-drawing exercises myself first anyway, and if that results in one- to two-hour YouTube videos that do reasonably well, that could be worth it.

I’m not sure whether it will work. One thing I discovered is that making YouTube videos is fun, and since drawing is fun, it could be cool to combine both! If it doesn’t work, I’ll keep developing the drawing exercises in private, as I did before.

More to follow, hopefully!

Yours sincerely,

WARMUPS

This is for anyone who wants to improve their drawing skills and specifically their hand dexterity. Practice drawing every day. There is no need for a reference image; you can do the warmups always, anywhere, without reference. Start the day with a drawing warm-up to improve pen(cil) control.
