Ink Lab AND Pen Drawing Adventures!

Deforming 3D Objects

As you may have seen, I have been making pen drawing exercises. I focus on creating pen drawing exercises that give you a higher chance of a visually pleasing result. I personally think it’s an important, if not one of the most important, things for a healthy drawing habit: when you’re happy with the result, you’ll get a dopamine hit from that, and you’ll be motivated to draw the next day again. If not, you either avoid that feeling by procrastinating, or you burn out trying to push yourself through it.

So it’s not unimportant.

Above was the first real live stream I did, and it was fun interacting with a few of you! During the live stream, I drew the page I needed for the Intersecting Boxes exercise, an exercise where I use the Intersecting Boxes model from the Practice Drawing This website. I had discovered a while back that when you get the hang of this model, it becomes surprisingly easy to get the intersecting boxes to look believable, therefore ending with a visually pleasing result!

I was able to use that same video footage as a time-lapse for the much shorter video that explains the drawing exercise.

That’s the direction I am taking for the coming period: I’ll do a live stream on Thursday (the day after this newsletter was sent) where I do an exercise in real time, thinking out loud and vocalizing my thought process while interacting with you live. Then, on Monday, there will be a short video with a time-lapse of this longer video, where I explain the exercise concisely.

Tomorrow, I’ll do another live stream. It’s pre-recorded, but I will be in the chat. I’ll publish the exercise video on Monday. These videos are about deforming 3D objects. Specifically, I found that deforming cylinder-symmetric objects is easier than drawing them undeformed! It’s easier to make them look believable. You can check it out here tomorrow if you want:

I am still working out the schedule, but my current thinking is to stream Thursday, between 15:00 and 19:00 Central European Time, which is between 09:00 and 13:00 New York Time, or 06:00 and 10:00 California time, or 22:00 and 02:00 Tokyo time. I hope that means everyone has an opportunity to join.

That will be on Tuesday and Thursday, starting next Tuesday, September 29th. You can set a notification for it here.

I streamed ad hoc yesterday to test live streaming. You can check it out below.

It was intended to be unambitious; I was drawing while I tested my equipment and chatted to whoever showed up, but then it became a lively interaction! It was a lot of fun: drawing, chilling, hanging out; some people had questions for me. I hope to do more of these!

Yours sincerely,
