Start By Drawing Negative Spaces First - Pen Drawing Adventures
Another fun drawing exercise that improves your skills and makes it easier to arrive at visually pleasing results in your sketchbook. This exercise is based on the observation that it tends to be easier to produce a nice drawing if you start by outlining the thing first.
It might sound strange, but it makes sense: by outlining, you are forced to observe its shape, and with that, you turn off the part of your brain that tries to simplify what it sees into symbols.
After you have the shape right, it's almost smooth sailing as you add the details inside. It's really cool. In the video, you can see me do the exercise. Try it out!
