You are doing the same thing but doing it wrong in their eyes.
Original new ideas are not always good ideas, but when they are, they can take off into the stratosphere in ways doing the same as others can not.
You can only do marginally better by doing the same as others in competitive fields. You can invent a new field and rule a vast, uncharted continent by doing something new.
