If You Improve Just One Small Thing Every Day, That Is Still Great Progress

Practice Drawing This Draw-along.

J
ames Clear developed the “one percent better every day” idea. It doesn’t make sense mathematically: you would be 37 times better after a year. What does that even mean in the context of drawing?

What does work is to improve something every day. It can be drawing-related: practicing drawing something. But it can also be adjacent to drawing: improving the workspace where you draw, organizing the reference images you work with, and going through your sketchbook for ideas to expand. Or it can be something outside of drawing entirely: writing an article or slightly improving your website.

This doesn’t grow exponentially as James Clear suggests; it is additive, not multiplicative, but it does yield continuous tiny, controllable improvements which add up over time.

It is also satisfying to finish even small things.

A small thing every day.

Yours sincerely,
